FIRST IMPRESSION
He comes off as an abnormally solemn teenager, a young man who's clearly traumatized and overwhelmed by his current situation. In the past, he was mistaken for an escaped prisoner-of-war, which makes sense given his disposition and the scarring around his throat - the apparent result of a failed execution by hanging.
In 2003, Jonas was born to Hannah and Michael Kahnwald of Winden, Germany. His mother was a massage therapist. His father was an artist struggling with mental illness. Their marriage was strained by Michael's health and Hannah's infidelity, but both of them adored their son. He had a happy childhood. He grew to be a shy but ordinary teenager, somewhat bored by small town life and preoccupied with his budding relationship with his classmate, Martha Nielsen.

Then his father committed suicide. On June 28, 2019, Jonas and his mother returned home from a party at the Nielsens' to discover Michael's body hanging by a noose in his art studio. No note appeared to be left at the scene to offer any explanation or closure for the family. Shattered by the sudden loss, Jonas had a mental breakdown and was institutionalized in a psychiatric facility for two months.

When he returned to school in November, his best friend Bartosz Tiedemann assured him that he'd told their classmates Jonas had gone to France for a student exchange program and that no one knew about his hospitalization. Unfortunately, in the meantime, Bartosz had also started dating Martha, with no knowledge that Jonas and Martha had slept together during the summer. Jonas graciously accepted that Martha had moved on and attempted to resettle into his old life, though his father's suicide had left him traumatized.

On the night of November 4, Jonas and Bartosz set off into the woods near the local nuclear power plant with Martha, her older brother Magnus, and their little brother Mikkel, in search of a drug stash left behind by their schoolmate Erik Obendorf, who had recently gone missing. When they arrived at the cave where the drugs had been hidden, they discovered Franziska Doppler already there, having claimed the drugs for herself. A fight broke out, which was immediately interrupted by a strange noise emitting from the cave. As the group's flashlights simultaneously lost power, they all scattered in fear, running blindly through the forest. When they reunited at the road, they realized that Mikkel had gone missing.

A search party combed the woods all through the night and into the following days, but there was no sign of Mikkel to be found. Considering Erik's earlier disappearance, it appeared there was a child kidnapper lurking somewhere in Winden.

While sulking around the house in the days that followed, Jonas discovered a mysterious map hidden in his father's art studio. Shortly after, an anonymous package arrived for him. It contained an odd-looking lamp, a Geiger counter, and a letter from his father labeled Do not open before November 4, 10:13 P.M. The letter read:
Dear Jonas,

By the time you read this everything will have happened, irrevocably. It can no longer be changed. I would have liked to explain things to you sooner, but I hope once you understand how everything is connected, you will understand my decision.

The truth is a strange thing. You can try to suppress it, but it will always find its way back to the surface. We make a lie into our truth in order to survive. We try to forget. Until we can't anymore. We don't know even half of the mysteries of this world. We are wanderers in the darkness.

This is my truth. On November 4, 2019 I traveled through time to the year 1986. They boy from the future stayed. And in time he became a man. Mikkel became Michael, who never knew where he belonged.

By the time you read this I'll already be gone. Both as a boy and as a man. I hope you can forgive me. Everything is connected.

Mikkel / Michael
Using his father's map to guide him through the Winden Caves, Jonas found the same passage Mikkel used to travel back in time, crawling through it to arrive in 1986. After some searching, he located Mikkel in the hospital. He was intent on bringing his father back to his rightful time, but before he could act, a Stranger approached him and warned that Mikkel must remain to become Michael Kahnwald, or else he'd never father Jonas, and Jonas would cease to exist. Shaken, Jonas abandoned his plan and returned to 2019.

The newfound knowledge of his family tree horrified Jonas, not least because he'd just discovered that Martha was in fact his aunt. As she attempted to rekindle their relationship, he rejected her in disgust, though he offered no explanation for his sudden change of heart. He burned his father's letter and went on to confront his grandmother, Ines Kahnwald, who had adopted Mikkel in 1986. In speaking with her, Jonas realized she had known his father was a time traveler all along. Though Jonas had burned it earlier, Ines gave him Michael's suicide note, which had somehow been in her possession the whole time.

Realizing it was his own existence that was the anomaly at the center of this, Jonas returned to 1986, intent on bringing Mikkel back for certain this time so that everything could be set right, even at the cost of his own life. But when Jonas arrived at the hospital, he found a priest waiting for him at Mikkel's bedside. Before he could react, another man came up from behind him and knocked him unconscious.

When Jonas awoke, he found himself in an underground bunker styled like a child's bedroom with something that resembled an electric chair in the center of it. The slat in the cell door opened to reveal the Stranger just outside. Jonas demanded to know who he was, at which point the Stranger revealed he was the future Jonas. Which is precisely why, for all of Jonas's pleading, the Stranger refused to help him escape. He explained that it was necessary for Jonas to remain in that situation so that he would someday become the Jonas on the other side of the door - the Jonas who would allegedly destroy the time passage once and for all.

But as the Stranger worked from beneath the bunker, his plan backfired. He inadvertently opened the passage, creating a portal through which Jonas made contact with another little boy, trapped in the bunker in some other time.

When their hands touched through the portal, Jonas was transported to the year 2052. A catastrophic event had at some point left Winden in ruins, with the survivors banding together as a fanatical gang awaiting the promised day of salvation. Its brutal leader, Elisabeth Doppler (the now-grown little sister of Franziska), forbade any exploration of the deserted nuclear power plant, where it was whispered that she kept God hidden. Anyone who disobeyed her order was sentenced to death by hanging.

Trapped without a means to return to his own time, Jonas lived for six months in the ruins of his childhood home. Over the course of his stay, he came to understand that the apocalypse had occurred on June 27, 2020, killing his friends and family. Since the event originated in the power plant, Jonas snuck inside to investigate and found an unstable mass of Dark Matter hovering in the air. Having studied secret old recordings left behind by the power plant's former owner, Claudia Tiedemann, Jonas learned how to stabilize the exotic matter in order to enable time travel through it.

However, before he could put his plan into action, he was caught by Elisabeth's forces. Like all the others, he was sentenced to execution for trespassing. Shot in the leg and strung up on a noose, Jonas was left hanging to near-death before Elisabeth apparently changed her mind and severed the rope. She had him caged, instead, in an unprecedented move that prompted her follower, Silja, to question Jonas about what made him so special. She demanded that he show her what was hidden in the power plant.

Jonas led her inside and showed her how to stabilize the Dark Matter with electricity. Finally, he was able to create another portal. Without hesitation, despite Silja's frightened protests, Jonas stepped into the wormhole.

Instead of returning to 2020, Jonas found himself in 1921. Discovered wounded in the woods by local farm workers, he was assumed to be an escaped prisoner-of-war and granted room and board at a guesthouse in the village. There he met his great-great-grandmother Agnes Nielsen, still a little girl, and her older brother - a fellow time traveler calling himself Noah, who would someday grow up to be the priest that had kidnapped Jonas from Mikkel's hospital room in 1986.

The teenage Noah remarked that he had expected Jonas to be different. He led Jonas to the newly constructed church, where they were greeted by a heavily scarred man, introduced only as Adam. The leader of a secret society of time travelers known as Sic Mundus, Adam had been expecting Jonas to arrive. When Jonas demanded to know who Adam really was, Adam revealed the scars around his throat, which matched the same wounds Jonas had sustained during his hanging. Adam was Jonas, approximately sixty years older.

Walking his younger self through the complications of their situation, Adam explained the cycle of events that they had been repeating their whole lives and would continue to repeat unless they could find a loophole to set everything right. He told Jonas he'd realized that it was necessary for him to return to June 20, 2019 - the day before his father's suicide - to prevent that incident from occurring and setting them on this endless path. He also revealed that he had advanced time travel technology that could enable Jonas to travel to that precise day.

Desperate to end the cycle of pain, Jonas agreed. He set off for 2019, making use of the extra hours to seduce his beloved Martha, triggering the event that would lead her to hook up with his younger self at the Nielsens' party that night. Having obtained what he expected to be his last kiss, Jonas set off for home.

After a fraught reunion with his father, during which he revealed that he knew Michael was really Mikkel Nielsen, Jonas demanded to know why his father was planning to take his life. Michael was stunned by the accusation. He had never intended to kill himself and he knew nothing about the goodbye letter Jonas showed him, though it was clearly in his handwriting. When Jonas asked how Mikkel had even managed to time travel to 1986 in the first place, Michael revealed that it was Jonas himself who had led him through the caves on November 4.

Further discussion was interrupted by the sudden arrival of Claudia Tiedemann. She claimed that she had seen a world without Jonas and that his absence wouldn't have the result he intended. Insisting that his role in the course of events was far bigger than he suspected, she urged him not to change the past but to accept that sacrifices must be made.

Michael, too, refused to take an action that threatened to erase his son's existence. Instead, he went through with the suicide, so that events would proceed as they always had. As Jonas left the house with Claudia, he realized in horror that he was the one had given his father the idea to kill himself in the first place.

Pledging to fight Sic Mundus and Adam, Jonas and Claudia departed 2019 together, after which he spent a year studying the science of time travel under her tutelage. She then sent him on a mission to June 27th, 1987, so that he could guide her younger self. Together, he and the younger Claudia traveled to the caves and reactivated the passage that the older Jonas had deactivated six months earlier.

From there, they traveled to the day of the apocalypse in 2020. Jonas reunited with Martha, intending to save her life, but before he could get her safely to the bunker, Adam appeared and shot Martha. As she was bleeding to death and Jonas tried in vain to help her, Adam explained that the pain of this loss was necessary so that Jonas would eventually grow to become him. He said that Jonas would always have this choice to make: save Martha or defeat Adam.

As Adam walked away, Jonas chose to remain by Martha's side, promising her that he'd find a way to change this outcome. Not a second later, another Martha walked through the door and stared down at her own dead body. Jonas, stunned, asked what time she had come from. She said that the real question was not what time? but what world?

They didn't have another moment to spare. The earth shook as the apocalypse commenced, and the new Martha pulled out a device to summon a portal for them. The two of them escaped through it just before the blast destroyed Winden.

DEMEANOR
He's a survivor. Solemn and pragmatic, Jonas is focused on the task at hand and has little concern for social niceties. Still, he's a warm and empathetic individual who will lend a hand or speak out in the name of justice.

PSYCHIC IMPRESSION
Jonas is an ordinary human. But in terms of fate, his existence is the result of a time paradox. He should never have been born and he knows it, yet all of his attempts to correct this anomaly have failed catastrophically, leaving him physically and mentally scarred.
Jonas Kahnwald is engaged in a battle against himself. He is the hero of a story in which he will inevitably become the villain, and thanks to the anomaly that led to his birth in the first place, he's been struggling against his fate in an endless cycle of time travel - an infinite loop of encountering his future self, doing everything in his power to keep from growing into that version of himself, and in doing so causing the events that lead to his grim evolution.

The teenage Jonas may not be the pinnacle of virtue, but he adheres to his own principles as best he can. Defiantly genuine and empathetic, he sees himself as the great truth-teller. He believes his role is to shed light on conspiracy and allow others to make their choices freely, with all the information they require to do so. Deception has taken everything from him. He won't abide it.

Though time travel necessitates circumspection, he is nothing like the lying and manipulative chessmaster he will someday become. Still, he can be vague and esoteric, especially in matters regarding his origin and purpose. Jonas is the mysterious result of a paradox. Few would even understand how he came to be, let alone believe him. To speak frankly about such matters would make him sound like a madman.

He's broken enough already. Formerly a sweet and caring boy, trauma has eliminated most of his former naivety and warmth. It's left him cynical and seemingly humorless. He's not cruel by nature, however. Unless he senses that someone is toying with him, he prefers to remain non-confrontational. As the introspective type, he solves his problems through patience and cunning. It's here that one can see hints of the genius leader he will become.

In the present, Jonas is independent and self-reliant, adaptive and resourceful. He has led himself out of impossible situations involving science and technology beyond the understanding of the greatest minds in the world, navigating a phenomenon that defies logic. Though he often despairs and feels helpless, in reality, Jonas is almost always the one who discovers the solution to his seemingly-inescapable predicaments. No one else has been there for him like he's been there for himself. Of course, trusting himself is also the most dangerous thing he can do.

SCENT
Jonas smells like whatever bath product is most readily available, sometimes with a hint of pot or cigarette smoke.

SOUND
His voice is soft and fragile, ordinarily a low murmur but growing shrill and cracking whenever he's upset.
A diminutive German teenager with sharp features, Jonas looks like a young soldier recently returned from a long war. He's gaunt and drawn, the dark circles around his deep blue eyes telling of years without decent sleep. His face is perpetually grim, the ability to smile long forgotten, his brow set in an anxious line. His fair skin is heavily freckled and his cheeks ruddy, growing redder when his emotion spikes. His strawberry-blonde hair is an overgrown mess, falling nearly to his chin. He doesn't seem to be capable of growing a beard yet, or else he'd surely have scruff.

When left uncovered, his most notable feature is the scar across his throat. To the observant eye, it's clearly the result of a noose's violent rope burn, though it's been over a year since he was hanged and any scabbing is long gone. He also has a scar on his left leg from a gunshot wound sustained at the same time as his attempted execution.

As far as style goes, Jonas has spent the past several years wearing whatever he could get his hands on that was also more or less appropriate to whatever time period he was living in. Left to his own devices, he dresses casually and comfortably. In summer, he'll go for simple a jeans and t-shirt combo. In winter, he'll throw on a wool sweater or a hoodie and an anorak. He tries to keep the scar on his neck hidden under a turtleneck, a scarf, or a loose kerchief.

ABILITIES

We follow the same old path Again and again
POWER SUMMARY
He can experience a moment like he's reliving it rather than living it for the first time. He can also control the effect of something before the cause has even begun. The Novikov self-consistency principle prevents anything happening to him that hasn't happened to his future self. He can manipulate Dark Matter to create a portal that enables time travel up to 33 minutes into the past or future.

MUNDANE SKILLS
Having been forced to live in post-apocalyptic and interwar time periods, Jonas has all the usual skills necessary to survive in harsh wilderness. He also spent a year under the tutelage of an experienced time traveler, who educated him on the scientific aspects of traveling, such as advanced quantum physics. He is a native German speaker who has studied some English as a second language.

DÉJÀ VU

Just as Jonas himself is the product of a causal loop, he experiences time (or time experiences him) as an eternal tangle. With this power, he can manipulate the effect of something before the cause has even begun. For example, he can arrive at a destination before having departed for that destination. He can know what someone is about to say because, from his perspective, he's already heard it. Essentially, this is a very limited form of time travel. Time curves around him and enables him to cut ahead of others. He's always been there because he was always going there.

This in no way makes him omnipotent. Whatever he does with this power must be something he was always capable of doing, because in using it, he has already done the act. He isn't capable of flying, so he can't experience the effect of flying even when bypassing the cause. If someone was already intending to have a conversation with him, though, he can know what was discussed before the conversation itself occurs. It's like he's reliving the moment rather than living it for the first time.

SELF-CONSISTENCY

Because Jonas has encountered his future self at various stages of life, nothing can happen to him that would prevent those future selves from existing as he has already known them. To prevent such a paradox, the Novikov self-consistency principle comes into play. If someone attempts to shoot him in the heart, by some luck, the shot will miss, because his future self has never been shot in the heart.

This is a latent form of probability manipulation that prevents Jonas from coming to serious physical harm, even if he's attempting to hurt himself. It also prevents him from major positive alterations, such as healing his scars, because his future self has those same scars. Something will always get in the way of anything happening to him that hasn't happened to his future self.

DARK MATTER

Dark Matter is the key that enables Jonas to travel through an Einstein–Rosen bridge to other points in time. It appears as a glowing ink-black mass that can exist in a solid, liquid, and gas state simultaneously. Normally, a machine is necessary to stabilize this exotic matter in order to create a portal. However, Jonas can now manipulate it himself, summoning Dark Matter at will. When doing so, it seems to be seeping from his own body, as if the stuff has been flowing through his veins.

The portal is a sphere that can fit about five people if they're huddled around Jonas when it appears. It can only remain stable enough to enable travel for fifteen seconds and may vanish sooner, as it will close the moment Jonas enters it. The unstable quality of this universe's timeline prevents Jonas from traveling years into the past or future, but he can use it to skip back or forward up to 33 minutes. He expends a great deal of energy with each jump. One 33-minute jump backward or forward will leave him winded. He may make an additional jump back in the direction he just left (for instance, if he just jumped 33 minutes into the past, he may return to the present) but this will cause him to lose consciousness upon arrival. Anyone traveling with him will remain unharmed. It takes a day and a half for him to fully recover from one jump and three days to recover if he's totally exhausted his energy.

Jonas won't personally be able to stop something from happening if it's already happened, but there may be information he can gather that will help him going forth. It also gives him a convenient escape from the present, if necessary. He can bring others through the portal with him. When using this power, he may encounter his own past or future self and exist as two simultaneous Jonases for the duration of the 33-minute window. Anyone who travels with him also runs the risk of encountering themselves.
